CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The Crimson were able to gain big leads early against the Lions in both games of the doubleheader, sending Columbia home with two losses: 13-5 and 8-1.
In the first game, Harvard scored in the three opening innings to take a sizeable 12-0 lead by the end of the third inning. Columbia was able to score two runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 12-2. With two outs, junior Thomas Stevens hit a single to center field and then scored as first-year Joey Mizzoni hit a triple to left center. Mizzoni then came across the plate on a wild pitch.
The Crimson were able to put a run across in the bottom half of the inning, but the Lions came back in the top of the sixth to get on the board again. First-year Spencer Silverstein singled to right field and then moved over to third as sophomore Mike Malfettone hit a double to the left side of the field. Sophomore Henry Perkins reached first on a fielding error by the Harvard third baseman and both Silverstein and Malfettone were able to come home.
The Lions scored their final run in the top of the seventh, as first-year Jake Summerhays hit senior Michael DeFazio in on a single to left field. Perkins (0-4) was pegged with the loss, going 1.1 innings, allowing four hits and six runs. DeFazio finished the game going a perfect 2-for-2 with one run scored and Mizzoni and Summerhays recored the Lions two RBI.
In the second game, Harvard once again had a big lead early, scoring five runs in the first and two more in the second to take an early 7-0 lead. Columbia got on the board in the top of the second, scoring one run. Senior Marc Gold led off the inning with a walk and then went to second on a passed ball. Malfettone joined him on base, also drawing a walk and then first-year Mike Roberts singled through the left side to load the bases. Sophomore Noah Cooper hit Gold in on a deep ground out to the shortstop.
That would be the only Columbia run of the game, as Harvard was able to score one more run in the fourth inning to win by a final score 8-1.
First-year Brett Beller recorded the loss, throwing three innings, allowing five hits and seven runs while striking out four batters. First-year Ron Williams hit well for Columbia, going 2-for-3 and Cooper recorded the Lions lone RBI.
Columbia takes on Rutgers at home on Tuesday, April 11 in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is to be thrown at 3 p.m.
