ITHACA, N.Y. — Columbia used a five-run fifth inning and the Lions' pitching staff continued to dominate to give the Lions a 9-1 victory over Cornell on Sunday. With the win, Columbia officially clinched the fourth and final spot in the Ivy League Tournament.
The Lions concluded the regular season 15-23-1 overall and 10-10-1 in the Ancient Eight. The Big Red finished 11-26 overall and 8-13 in conference play.
Thomas Santana set the tone on the mound, worked 6.0 innings, fanned seven batters, and only allowed one earned run. Will Harrigan made his second appearance this weekend and threw two scoreless innings. First-year Jack Korthas closed out the game and added a strikeout.
Jimmy Chadwell plated four Lions and went 2-for-4. Anthony Temevary had two RBI and recorded two hits. Ben Fishel was 2-for-3, contributed one run and one RBI.
The Lions were aggressive on the bases early, highlighted by two steals from Jack Kail and Temesvary. Kail reached after being hit by a pitch and quickly swiped second to get into scoring position. Temesvary followed with a walk and Kail moved to third on a fly out, and Temesvary stole second to put both runners into scoring position. Chadwell capitalized on the opportunity, driving a ball to right field to plate a pair.
The Big Red's biggest threat came in the third, loading the bases with no outs. However, Santana buckled down with a pair of strikeouts and induced a ground ball to come out of the frame unscathed.
Columbia broke through in the fifth inning, loading the bases as Snyder singled, Fishel was hit by a pitch, and Kail singled. Temesvary delivered a huge double down the right field line to plate Snyder and Fishel. With the bases loaded, Kail crossed home plate on a passed ball, and Chadwell knocked another two-run single to make it 7-0.
The Lions continued to roll as Kail hit a sac fly to plate Snyder in the sixth.
Cornell threatened again in the bottom of the frame, using a pair of hits to put runners on second and third to set up a sac fly, breaking the Lions' string of 15.1 shutout innings. Santana then forced the next batter to ground out to get through six.
In the seventh inning, Luke Jackson entered to pinch hit and provided another sac fly to help Dean Reynold score to cap the scoring.
Santana (5-4) secured his 16th career win, moving into sole possession of seventh place on Columbia's all-time wins list. He is also up to 164 career strikeouts, which puts him 10th in program history.
The Ivy League Tournament will be held from May 15-18, which will be hosted by either Penn or Yale, pending the results of the Bulldogs' series against Dartmouth next weekend.
