Kleinhans tossed 8.1 innings of shutout ball in game two in a 2-0 victory after the Lions dropped game one, 7-2
ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior Evan Kleinhans pitched a career-high 8.1 innings of shutout ball to help Columbia baseball to a 2-0 victory over Cornell to earn a doubleheader split on Saturday. The Lions (14-23-1, 9-10-1), who dropped game one, 7-2, can clinch the fourth and final spot in the Ivy League Tournament with a win in the series finale against the Big Red tomorrow.
First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at Booth Field, and the game can be seen on ESPN+.
Game 2
Kleinhans allowed just six hits and struck out five in just his third career start to pick up the win. Will Harrigan worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to pick up the save.
The Lions loaded the bases in the first and put two on in the second, but couldn't get anything across. In the third, singles by Anthony Temesvary and Cole Fellows put runners on the corners, and Columbia got on the board thanks to a balk.
Temesvary struck again in the fifth inning, launching a leadoff homer to right center, as the Lions doubled the lead, 2-0.
From that point on, Kleinhans retired 13 of the next 14 batters and became the first Lions' starter to begin the ninth this season. With one out, the Big Red notched back-to-back singles to bring the winning run to the plate to force a call to the bullpen.
TJ Swidorski took an 0-2 pitch for a single to load the bases, but on the very next pitch, Harrigan induced a groundball to Jimmy Chadwell at short, who stepped on second and fired to first for the game-ending double play.
Temesvary led the offense, going 2-for-4 and scoring both runs in the thriller, including a home run to seal the victory. Tate Vogler went 2-for-3 in the nightcap.
Game 1
Cornell used three runs in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie, and added three more in the eighth to get past Columbia in the series opener.
The Lions struck first in the fourth, capitalizing on a two-out rally. Jimmy Chadwell reached and swiped second to move into scoring position before Hunter Snyder delivered an RBI single to center, plating Chadwell for a 1-0 lead.
The Big Red answered in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff walk and wild pitch set the table before a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third. Cornell then came through with a two-out RBI single to even the score at 1-1, though Columbia limited further damage when catcher Owen Estabrook cut down a runner trying to steal second.
Cornell broke it open in the sixth, loading the bases after a walk, single, sacrifice and intentional walk. A pair of RBI singles and a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded fueled the rally, turning a tight game into a 4-1 lead for the Big Red.
Cornell added separation in the eighth, highlighted by a three-run homer by Trent Lopez to extend the lead and put the game out of reach.
The Lions pushed across a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Chadwell, but couldn't close the gap as Cornell took game one, 7-2.
Alex Sotiropoulos (1-4) lasted 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits to go with six strikeouts.
