“Harvard is very strong up top,” Kresberg said. “To beat them, we had to win the doubles point and take the fourth, fifth and sixth singles.”
The strategy appeared off to a good start when sophomore Lauren Shearer teamed with first-year Allison Cordell to win third doubles, 8-6. Sophomore Nina Suda and first-year Carling Donovan were up 6-5 and Suda was serving ad in (one point from going up 7-5) when the point and the match slipped away to an 8-6 loss.
Harvard's three top singles players then took the reins. In winning first through third singles in straight sets, they lost only 14 games.
Sophomore Beier Ko, ranked among the top 200 in the world, defeated senior Milena Kachar, 6-2, 6-1; first-year Lena Litvak, 40th among the world's Juniors, defeated Nina Suda, 6-2, 6-3; and senior Preethi Mukundan beat fellow Californian Carling Donovan, 6-2, 6-4.
Lauren Shearer, another Californian, gave Columbia its only point when she downed first-year Elizabeth Brook, 6-3, 6-3. “Lauren had a great weekend,” Kresberg said. “She won three of four matches. Brook is a very good player.”
The Lions take to the road next weekend, playing at Yale Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Brown Saturday at 12 noon.
