Shannon Nets Hat Trick in Lacrosse's Loss to Yale

NEW YORK ? The Columbia lacrosse team fell to Yale, 12-6, on April 8 at Robert K. Kraft Field. Columbia pulled within one with 26:30 to go in the game, but that was the closest they would get as Yale held on, improving to 4-8, 1-4 Ivy League while the Lions fell to 5-6 and 0-5 in the conference.

The Bulldogs scored the first two goals of the game before the Lions responded with two of their own, both by junior attacker Brittany Shannon. Her first goal of the game was a free position shot at 18:17 followed by an unassisted tally with 11:52 remaining in the half.

Yale went ahead 3-2 on a goal by Ariana Papier, but Columbia's Rachael Ryan evened the score once again on a free position goal. The Bulldogs added one more to close out the half with a slim 4-3 lead.

At the half, Yale held a slight advantage in shots (11-10) and ground balls (11-9), but dominated the circle picking up six draw controls compared to Columbia's two.

The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 5-3 less than a minute into the second half. Holly Glynn pulled the Lions within one on an unassisted goal at 26:30, but that was as close as Columbia would get.

Yale went on a four goal run before Glynn and Shannon stopped their momentum with tallies of their own to make it 9-6 with 12:35 to play. But the Bulldogs added three more and held on to the ball as the clock ran out on the Lions.

Shannon led the way for the Columbia with three goals while Glynn finished with a pair of goals and two caused turnovers. Ryan had a goal and chipped in two draw controls and Emma Mintz made 10 saves to go along with two caused turnovers and a ground ball.

The Lions are back in action on Saturday, April 12 when they host Bryant at 1 p.m.
