NEW YORK - Seniors Flannery Gallagher and Gabrielle Geronimos and junior Taylor Gattinella have been named tri-captains for the 2010-11 lacrosse season, head coach Liz Kittleman recently announced.
"We are excited to have chosen our 2011 captains and I know that Flannery, Gabrielle, and Taylor will do an extraordinary job leading our team this year," said Kittleman. "These three players have the respect of their teammates and coaches, and their commitment to our goals will prove contagious. This team is working very hard to prepare for our upcoming season, and so far everyone has proven a leader in her own way. I expect this will continue as we approach February, and with a strong group of seniors at the helm of this program, I have faith that it will."
Gallagher broke into the starting lineup as a sophomore and has started every game over the last two seasons. A vocal member of the Columbia defensive unit, Gallagher scooped up 12 groundballs and caused five turnovers in 2010.
Geronimos has been a fixture in the offensive unit each of her three seasons as a Lion. Last year she ranked third on the team with 31 points on 26 goals and five assists. She also picked up 19 groundballs and had five caused turnovers.
A 2010 honorable mention All-Ivy League selection in the midfield, Gattinella is one of the top two-way players on the team. On the offensive side of the ball, Gattinella put up 23 points on 21 goals and two assists, good enough for fourth on the squad. She led the team with 40 groundballs and racked up 37 draw controls for the second year in a row, ranking second all-time in a single-season.
Columbia returns 18 players from last year's roster, adds nine new faces in the class of 2014, in addition to a new coaching staff made up of Kittleman and Courtney Lubbe. The Lions open the 2011 season on Saturday, February 26 when they travel to West Long Branch, N.J. to square off against Monmouth at 1 p.m.
