Row paces Lions offense with five points
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Columbia lacrosse team dropped an Ivy League contest to Cornell, 12-6, on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field.
With the result, the Lions move to 6-3 overall and 0-2 in Ivy League play, while the Big Red improve to 6-3 (1-1 Ivy).
Cornell controlled the early stages, scoring four of the game's first five goals to take a 4-1 lead after the opening quarter. Cordelia Flemming accounted for Columbia's first goal, finishing a feed from Emma Row.
The Big Red extended their lead in the second quarter, scoring three more goals to build a 7-1 advantage before Maddie Brogan found the back of the net late in the half to cut the deficit to 7-2 at the break.
Columbia showed signs of momentum coming out of halftime. Emma Row scored early in the third quarter and Anna Becker added another goal to trim the deficit to 7-4. However, Cornell responded with a goal later in the period to maintain control heading into the fourth.
In the final frame, Row added her second goal of the game and Cecelia Messner converted a free-position opportunity, but Cornell answered each push and closed out the 12-6 victory.
Row led the Lions with five points on two goals and three assists. Brogan, Messner, Becker and Flemming each added a goal for Columbia.
Despite the result, Columbia held an advantage in draw controls (13-7) and matched Cornell with 13 ground balls.
The Lions continue Ivy play next weekend with a trip to Philly on Saturday to take on the Quakers. First draw is set for noon.
