Becker, Brogan each tally hat tricks for Columbia
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Columbia lacrosse team dropped an Ivy League contest to Penn, 15-8, on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field.
With the result, the Lions move to 6-4 overall and 0-3 in Ivy League play, while the Quakers improve to 4-5 (2-0 Ivy).
Columbia and Penn were locked in a tightly contested first half, with the Lions answering each early push from the Quakers. After falling behind 2-0, Columbia responded with goals from Lilah Kirch and Maddie Brogan to cut the deficit to one at the end of the first quarter. The Lions carried that momentum into the second, as Cordelia Flemming and Anna Becker scored to even the game at 4-4. Becker's goal came on a rebound, followed by a beautiful behind-the-back shot.
Penn, however, found a late goal before halftime to take a slim 5-4 lead into the break. Ava Kimche helped keep the deficit at just one, as she made a diving save in the final moments of the half.
The Quakers created separation in the second half, opening the third quarter with four unanswered goals to extend the lead to 9-4. Penn continued to build on that momentum in the fourth, scoring five of the first six goals of the period to push the advantage to double digits.
Columbia tried to fight back late, with Becker and Brogan each adding goals in the final minutes, but the Lions were unable to close the gap.
Becker and Brogan led the Lions offensively with three goals apiece, while Flemming and Kirch each added a goal. Messner paced Columbia with two assists.
In goal, Ava Kimche matched her career-high with 15 saves while facing a high-volume Penn attack.
Columbia returns home next Saturday and will host Brown for its annual Kathleen Roskot Alumnae Game.
