NEW YORK – Columbia sophomore fencers Neely Brandfield-Harvey and Sammy Roberts will compete for the United States at the Junior World Championships in April in Baku, Azerbaijan, it was announced recently by the United States Fencing Association.
Brandfield-Harvey, who fences epee, has been ranked among the best juniors in the country in recent years. The native Texan made first team All-Ivy League in February after posting a 15-3 record in the round-robin tournament, tied for the best mark among all Ivy epeeists. Brandfield-Harvey currently has a 34-12 record in NCAA competition this year.
Part of Columbia's strong sabre squad, Roberts was also a first team All-Ivy Leaguer in February, carrying a 14-2 record throughout the two-week event. Her run through the Ivies gives her a record of 36-14 in NCAA bouts this season.
It was the second straight year that Roberts has been a first team All-Ivy League honoree and her prowess extends beyond the league. In January, she made it to the round of 16 in elite women's sabre at the San Jose North American Cup.
