BOSTON -- After peppering Boston University's redshirt freshman goalkeeper Brandon Briggs with shot after shot in the first half, the Columbia University men's soccer team saw the Terriers score a pair of late goals in the second to take a 2-0 decision on Monday night at Nickerson Field. With their
second straight shutout victory, the Terriers improve to 2-0-1, while
the Lions drop to 0-2-0.
Junior midfielder Francois Anderson set the tone early with his
speed on the outside, first taking a shot that was saved by the Briggs at at the 2:16 mark. In the 16th minute, sophomore Nick Ayers
headed a chip shot toward the far post inside the box, but Briggs
stretched his arms out to keep the game scoreless.
The Lions entered the
locker room with a 12-6 edge in shot attempts.
To start the second half, Columbia came out attacking again with
three shots in the first five minutes. Senior Bayo Adafin had a pair, while Anderson had the other.
Boston University got on the board in the 77th minute when Ben Havey took a pass near midfield, dribbled quickly toward the
box and got through a couple of defenders, including a charging Alexander Aurrichio, to place the ball in the net for his second goal of
the season.
With less than a minute to go, Havey brought the
ball toward right side of the box and attempted a shot that was blocked
by a Lions defender. He quickly recovered the ball and passed to Aaron O'Neal, who knocked it into the open net for the final tally.
Aurrichio finished the contest with six saves in goal. The Lions closed the match with a 19-17 advantage in shots.
Columbia will return to action on Friday, Sept. 10 as it takes on Hartwick at the Mayor's Cup in Oneonta, N.Y.
