WEST POINT, N.Y. - Three Columbia women's basketball players
scored in double figures but it would not be enough to overcome Army on
Wednesday night as the Lions dropped a 61-51 decision in nonleague action at
Christl Arena.
Columbia (1-5), which had defeated the Black Knights 63-58 a
season ago, dropped its second straight game as Army (6-1) extended its winning
streak to five.
Taylor Ward and Tyler Simpson each had 11 points for the
Lions, while Courtney Bradford pitched in 10. Simpson and Bradford also led the
defensive end with seven rebounds apiece. Taylor Ball set the tone for the
Lions with five assists to lead Columbia to a season-high 11 helpers.
After a scoreless opening two minutes, Army fired off four
straight points to take the lead. Though Columbia never went ahead in the first
half, the Lions stayed close behind with aggressive defense and timely shooting.
A 5-0 Columbia run that included a three-pointer by Lizzy
Stachon cut Army's lead to 8-7 with 14:31 to play. The Lions kept pace with the
Black Knights, closing out the half with two back-to-back baskets by Bradford
to head to the locker room trailing Army, 28-25.
Columbia rattled off six unanswered points in the second
half to take its first lead of the game, 31-28, holding Army scoreless for
nearly the first five minutes of the half. Army used an 9-0 run to push ahead
once again, 38-33, with 12:38 remaining.
Ward's second three-pointer of the night brought the Lions
within two, 38-36 with 11:38 on the clock, but that would be as close as the
Lions would come the rest of the night.
Columbia will look to recover in the second portion of its
three game road swing against Bryant on Saturday, December 1 for a 1:00 p.m.
tipoff.
