COLUMBIA'S STATUS
Columbia returns to Ivy League play at Penn Saturday after claiming a pair of comeback wins over Towson and UMass last weekend.
The Lions fell behind 1-0 to the Tigers, but rattled off three unanswered to come away with a 5-3 win. Christina Freibott continued to play the role of facilitator with three assists. Katie Ruesterholz and Whitney Hartsone netted a pair of goals in the win.
Trailing 2-0 early, Columbia stormed back to tie the game before the half and Lauren Skudalski netted the game-winner late. Skudalski chipped in on all three goals, assisting on the Lions first two scores.
SCOUTING THE QUAKERS
Penn is on a three-game skid and fell to Monmouth and No. 2 Maryland last week.
Against the Hawks, the Quakers fell behind 3-0 before cutting the deficit to one before the half. However, Monmouth scored 10 minutes into the second frame to ice the game.
The Terps had eight players score nine goals in a shutout win on Sunday.
SCOUTING THE BLUE HENS
Delaware is riding a five-match winning streak. Four of those five victories have been by one goal.
Last weekend, the Blue Hens knocked off Princeton, 2-1 in double OT and Towson, 2-1.
Delaware and Columbia share six common opponents on the season (Cornell, Villanova, Fairfield, Princeton, Towson, Hofstra).
A LOOK BACK... PENN
Down by two goals in the second half, the Lions fought back and Liz Cruz provided the game-winner in the 83rd minute to lift Columbia to a 4-3 victory and send Penn home with its first Ivy League loss of the season. Lauren Skudalski provided two goals and added a defensive save. Christina Freibott posted three assists, including the clincher. Three of the last four meetings between these teams have gone to overtime with the Lions taking two of those decisions.
A LOOK BACK... DELAWARE
Columbia rallied from a 3-1 deficit to cut the lead to one in the final minutes of play, but could not net the equalizer before falling to Delaware 3-2 at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue last October. Christina Freibott and Lauren Skudalski were the Lions' goal scorers.
HOME SWEET HOME
With a 7-1 record at the Baker Athletics Complex, the Lions' have tied the second most home wins in program history. Columbia went a perfect 8-0 at home in 2007 and was 7-3 in 2000.
KEEPING UP WITH KENDALL
In her first start of the season, sophomore goalkeeper Kendall Kuntz came up with two key saves late in the game to hold off UMass, 3-2, on Oct. 12. Kuntz made both stops on penalty corners as time expired to lift the Lions to the win.
'HART' OF THE MATTER
It may not always show up on the stat-sheet, but first-year midfielder Whitney Hartstone has been a consistent player for the Lions this season. Against Towson on Oct. 10, her hard work was rewarded with a pair of goals in th 5-3 triumph for her first multi-point game of her career.
TOP OF THE CHARTS
In Columbia's win over Princeton, Christina Freibott set a pair of program assist records with her two-dime performance. Her feed on Katie Ruesterholz' goal in the second minute marked her 22nd career assist, breaking the old mark held by Dana Zullo '03 and Christine Buszczak '10. Freibott also dished out her 11th helper of the year on the game-winner late in the second half to establish a new single-season record, previously owned by Buszczak.
DO YOU NEED ASSISTANCE?
Freibott's 18 assists lead the Ivy League and her 1.40 average per game put her first in the nation. Freibott has tied the school's single-game record with three dimes on three occasions this season and four times in her career. Freibott is currently riding a six-game point scoring streak and has only been held off the scoresheet twice in 12 games this season. She is seven away from the single-season Ivy League record of 25, currently held by Princeton's Kirsty Hale.
