COLUMBIA'S STATUS
Columbia and Dartmouth will battle to stay atop the Ivy League standings as the Big Green pay a visit to New York Sunday. Both teams sit at 3-1 in conference play and aim to remain in control of their destiny.
Prior to the game, the Lions will honor seniors Zoe Blake, Caroline Donnal, Kyle Marsh, Ellie Robertson, Marlee Silverstein and Lauren Skudalski who will be playing their final home game at the Baker Athletics Complex.
Last week, Columbia extended its winning streak to four after a pair of comeback victories on the road. First was a 4-3 OT thriller at Penn which kept them in pace with the rest of the Ancient Eight leaders. The Lions followed up with two scores in the final five minutes to knock off Delaware, 2-1, the next day.
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth is one of the teams tied with Columbia atop the Ivy League standings. The Big Green split last weekend, winning its Ancient Eight contest over Yale, 4-2, before falling 1-0 to UMass-Lowell Sunday.
A LOOK BACK... DARTMOUTH
Dartmouth's Ali Savage recorded a hat trick and added an assist in a 6-2 win for the Big Green in Hanover last season. With the game tied, 2-2, Dartmouth scored four unanswered in the final 22 minutes to come away victorious. Christina Freibott is the only remaining Lion that recorded a point, scoring a first half goal.
COMEBACK KIDS
During its four-game winning streak, Columbia has had to come from behind in each victory. The Lions trailed by one in their contests against Towson, Penn (twice) and Delaware and erased a two-goal deficit against UMass.
FREIBOTT'S STREAK
Junior Christina Freibott is riding an eight-game point scoring streak and has only been held off the scoresheet twice this season (UConn and Providence). She is currently the two-time reigning Ivy League Player of the Week and was featured in Oct. 20's Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd.
MEREDITH COMES UP BIG
Sophomore Meredith Kalberer's first goal of the season was a big one, scoring the equalizer in the 67th minute at Delaware to spark the rally in Columbia's 2-1 win on Oct. 19.
'HART' OF THE MATTER
It may not always show up on the stat-sheet, but first-year midfielder Whitney Hartstone has been a consistent player for the Lions this season. She came up with the game-winner 19 seconds into overtime to complete a 4-3 comeback win at Penn. Against Towson on Oct. 10, her hard work was rewarded with a pair of goals in the 5-3 triumph for her first multi-point game of her career.
HOME SWEET HOME
With a 7-1 record at the Baker Athletics Complex, the Lions' have tied the second most home wins in program history. Columbia went a perfect 8-0 at home in 2007 and was 7-3 in 2000.
DO YOU NEED ASSISTANCE?
Freibott's 19 assists lead the Ivy League and her 1.36 average per game put her first in the nation. Freibott has tied the school's single-game record with three dimes on three occasions this season and four times in her career. Freibott is currently riding a six-game point scoring streak and has only been held off the scoresheet twice in 12 games this season. She is six away from the single-season Ivy League record of 25, currently held by Princeton's Kirsty Hale.
SKUDALSKI 'SAVES' THE DAY
Senior back Lauren Skudalski's eight defensive saves this season are tied for second in the nation. Skudalski posted stops in four-straight games from Sep. 24-Oct. 3. For her career, she has 21, which is a program record, dating back to 2002.
SHARING IS CARING
Not only is Freibott having a fine season setting up goals, the Lions have two more of the best facilitators in the Ivy League in Lauren Skudalski and Kyle Marsh. The latter two have split time on the insert on penalty corners and have seven assists each to rank among the conference leaders. Due to that success on set pieces, Columbia is among the national leaders in assists per game, averaging 3.71 to lead the NCAA.
EVERYONE PUTS THE LIONS IN A CORNER
Columbia's 9.93 penalty corners per game lead the Ivy League and rank second in the NCAA. Of the Lions' 37 goals this season, 20 have come off set pieces.
