NEW YORK - The Columbia wrestling team will embark on one of its final two tournaments in the 2014 calendar year this weekend, when the Lions head to Las Vegas for the 33rd Annual Cliff Keen Invitational, beginning on Friday.
About the Lions
Tyler Zimmer and Connor Sutton lead the Lions in wins so far, as both wrestlers have put together a 9-3 record. Zimmer also is tops on the team with five falls at 157, while Sutton has two falls at 149.
Garrett Ryan has started hot in his first season. The heavyweight has an 8-4 record, matching Markus Scheidel at 157 for the second best record on the team.
Angelo Amenta and Shane Hughes, both Columbia captains, have put together winning records so far. Amenta has gone 6-4 at 133 with two major decisions, while Hughes is 4-3 at 174, with two falls.
Senior Matt Idelson had his best outing at the New York State Championships, going 5-1. The 197-pounder has notched three major decisions this season, which is second to first-year Tyrel White at 165, who has the most on the team with four. Both Idelson and White have seven wins in 2014-15.

About the Cliff Keen Invitational
The Lions will get a lot of national perspective this weekend, being one of 39 teams taking part in the invitational, spreading from across the country. Four of the top seven teams in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches poll will make the trip, including No. 2 Minnesota, No. 3 Cornell, No. 6 Virginia Tech, and No. 7 Ohio State.
Cornell will not be the only school from the Ivy League and EIWA that Columbia has potential matches with. Brown and Harvard will also represent the EIWA and Ivy League, while other EIWA opponents include American, Army, Bucknell, Hofstra, and Navy.

- The 2013 Cliff Keen Invitational title was taken by Oklahoma, who will not be present this year. The Sooners scored 154.5 points, edging out second place Nebraska (130.5), while Ohio State (119.5) was third, Cornell (115.5) was fourth, and Michigan (104.5) rounded out the top five.
- This will be the first time Columbia participates at the tournament since the 2010-11 season, when the team scored 19.5 points.
- In 2006, Columbia had its best finish in program history at the tournament, tallying 37.5 points.
