NEW YORK – Billy Janzer has been named the new assistant coach for the wrestling program, Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Donny Pritzlaff announced on Tuesday afternoon.
"We are thrilled to announce that Billy Janzer has joined Columbia Wrestling as an assistant coach," Pritzlaff said. "Billy is an outstanding young coach, deeply committed to developing our students into champions both on and off the mat. We are very fortunate to have him join us and elevate our young men to new heights. Having maintained a close relationship with Billy for over a decade, I can attest that he will bring even more toughness and intensity to the team. We are excited to witness his professional progression and the significant impact he will have in New York City as we continue to advance our program's championship culture."
Janzer joins the staff after serving as a graduate assistant coach at The Citadel during a historic season that saw four wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships, three capture conference championships, and culminated with sophomore Thomas Snipes being named the SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Before that, he served as head coach for the Bunker Wrestling Club in Clayton, N.J. and the American Wrestling & MMA club in Williamstown, N.J. There, he supervised youth wrestlers ages 5-18 in skill-based circuits, individual workouts and demonstration of skill.
Before entering the coaching profession, Janzer was a standout wrestler for Rutgers. A two-time NCAA National Qualifier and 2021 Big Ten Place winner. In his final season wrestling for Rutgers, he was a full-time starter at the 197-pound weight class. He finished that season with a pair of victories over top-30 opponents, including a win over No. 17 ranked Cole Urbas in RU's win over No. 21 Penn.
For his career, he earned 48 wins and was the Scarlet Knights' 2020 dual meet scoring champion after going 21-10. That season, he finished the year ranked No. 18 according to FloWrestling and Open Mat.
In May of 2023, he graduated from Rutgers with a degree in labor studies and employment relations. He is currently earning his master's in health and human performance with a concentration on athletic performance from The Citadel Graduate College.
