
Duke Downs Baseball in Series Finale

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke completed the sweep of the Columbia baseball team with a 16-4 win Wednesday night. The Lions are now 3-9 on the year.
Jordan Serena went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI in the game.
Like the previous game, the Lions opened the scoring. In the second, Joey Falcone hit a leadoff double and scored from second the Duke shortstop threw away a routine grounder into the Columbia dugout.
However, the Blue Devils responded in the bottom of the inning. A hit batter and walk led to Kenny Koplove doubling over the head of Shane Adams in left field, tying things up, 1-1.
Will Savage drew a walk with one out in the third and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Shane Adams then beat out an infield single to plate the go-ahead run. After a passed ball moved Adams into scoring position, Jordan Serena doubled off the 32-foot tall leftfield wall to extend the advantage to 3-1.
Duke scored four runs on just one hit to jump in front in its at bats in the third. Two walks and a hit batter filled the base paths and a free pass to the next batter brought in one. The next batter, Peter Zyla, tripled to clear the bases, giving the Blue Devils a 5-3 lead.
In the fourth, the Blue Devils sent nine men to the plate and tacked on six runs on six hits to bust the game open.
Harrisen Egly took the decision (0-1), going 2.2 innings.
The Lions will head to Spartanburg, South Carolina, to open up a four-game set with USC Upstate. The first game of the series is slated for Thursday, March 19, at 6 p.m.
