NEW YORK - The Columbia softball team dropped an Ivy League doubleheader to the returning conference champions, Dartmouth, throughout snow flurries at Columbia Softball Stadium.
Big Green pitcher Kristen Rumley had a career day, posting a no-hitter in the first game and another complete game shutout in the second, as Dartmouth got by Columbia 8-0 in game one, and 9-0 in game two. With the pair of losses, the Lions dip to 4-15 (1-3) on the season.
After a scoreless first, the Big Green poured it on in the second inning of game one, scoring two runs, before two more in the third and three in the fourth gave them a 7-0 lead. Dartmouth made it a shortened game when they added one run in the sixth, and the Columbia batters were unable to reach base in the home half of the inning, making it an 8-0 final.
Dartmouth carried the momentum into the second game, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Lions ended Rumley's hitless streak at seven innings in the bottom of the second, when Tonia Wu led off the inning with a double to left center. A groundout and two strikeouts left the sophomore stranded at second to end the leadoff threat.
With the Big Green ahead by a score of 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Kerry Cook reached base on a one out single to second. A strikeout and a groundout again ended the Columbia threat, as Rumley ended the day stranding all three Lion batters that reached base. During the double dip, the Dartmout pitcher went 12.0 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out 14.
Tessa Kroll and Kayla Maloney took home losses for Columbia, after the Lion pitching was strong the day before in a split with Harvard. Wu came on in relief in both games, going a total of 7.1 innings and giving up five earned runs with four strikeouts.
Up next, the Lions hit the road to Stony Brook for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader with the Seawolves, before continuing Ivy League play on Good Friday with a pair at Yale, then a Saturday doubleheader at Brown.
