First year starter was also named Co-Rookie of the Week
PRINCETON, N.J. – Columbia softball first-year pitcher Mads Lawson was named the Ivy League Pitcher of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. The native of Rancho Murieta, Calif., was also named the Co-Rookie of the Week.
Lawson was sensational, going 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA and a pair of complete games, including a 2-hit complete game shutout as the Lions swept Dartmouth on the road last weekend. It is the first time in her career she has earned Pitcher of the Week honors, she was named Co-Rookie of the Week on March 23.
In the opener, Lawson went the distance and was a one-out double in the seventh away from tossing her second complete game shutout of the season. She retired 11 batters in a row from the third inning until the sixth.
For an encore, Lawson went the distance, tossing a two-hit complete game shutout. She took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning when Dartmouth's Georgia Bilski slapped a single into shallow center field with one out.
Lawson allowed just five base runners total, issuing three walks and a pair of singles, while striking out two. It is Lawson's 11th complete game of the season.
For the year, she is 7-6 with a 2.82 ERA. She has 11 complete games, has tossed 89.1 innings, and has struck out 85 while holding opponents to a .235 average. All those numbers rank in the top four in the Ivy League this season.
"We're extremely proud of Mads for the way she led us on the mound this weekend," head coach Jennifer Teague said. "Week in and week out, she continues to put in the work and competes with incredible inner drive. It's great to see the conference recognize the level of talent and commitment she brings every time out."
Columbia returns to action on Saturday when they host Yale. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. first pitch.
