PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia baseball team picked up a key series win after topping Princeton, 9-1, in the series finale Sunday. The Lions move to 19-11 overall and 10-2 in Ivy League play to move back into a tie with Penn for first place in the Gehrig Division.
Will Savage had a monster game, going 3-for-6 with a career-best five RBI. Nick Maguire also went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
Mike Weisman gave the Lions another quality start, throwing five innings of five-hit, shutout ball with three strikeouts to improve to 3-1.
Just like in game one, the Lions took a 1-0 lead. A single by Nick Maguire and sacrifice bunt set the table for Will Savage, who recorded a base hit to open the scoring in the third.
Columbia went back to work in the fourth, using a two-run double by Kanemaru to gain some breathing room. Maguire followed with a base-hit to score Kanemaru and give the Lions a 4-0 advantage.
An error brought in Columbia's fifth run in the sixth before Princeton got on the board in the seventh. However, Savage took Princeton's Nick Donatiello deep for a two-run homer to make it 7-1.
Savage capped his big day with a two-run single in the ninth to complete the scoring.
The Lions will continue their New Jersey swing when they face Rutgers in a non-conference mid-week game on Wednesday, April 15. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m. in Piscataway.
