LEADING OFF
COLUMBIA'S STATUS
The Lions used three solo home runs along with tremendous pitching from George Thanopoulos and Kevin Roy to top Penn, 4-2, in a Gehrig Division playoff last Saturday.
Jordan Serena belted a leadoff solo homer and the Lions led 2-0 after a Gus Craig sac fly after one inning. The Quakers plated two runs in the third and the score remained that way until Logan Boyher jacked a solo shot in the seventh to give Columbia the lead for good. David Vandercook added his fourth long ball of the year in the eighth for insurance.
Thanopoulos went seven innings, allowed just the two runs and struck out seven. Roy tossed a perfect final two frames to pick up the save.
DARTMOUTH'S STATUS
The Big Green have been idle since an April 28 contest against Amherst. Dartmouth clinched its eighth consecutive Rolfe Division crown in the second to last week of the regular season after sweeping Brown.
The Big Green went a perfect 12-0 against divisional opponents and split four doubleheaders with all four Gehrig Division foes.
DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN
After tying Penn for the Division crown and topping them in a one-game playoff for the second year in a row, Columbia will host Dartmouth in the Ivy League Championship for the third consecutive season.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Big Green lead the all-time series, 101-76, but the Lions have won six of the last eight, dating back to the 2013 Ivy League Championship series. The teams split a pair of games at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium earlier this year.
ILCS HISTORY
This weekend marks Columbia's sixth apperance in the Ivy League Championship since its inception in 1993. The Lions have won three of their five series and are 7-5 in ILCS games.
A BAKER'S DOZEN
With their 27-14 record, the Lions are 13 games over the .500 mark for the first time in program history. For all of its success, Columbia has received votes in the NCBWA National Poll three times on the season.
HOW DO YOU SPELL RELIEF?
On the year, Columbia has 13 saves which has set a new single-season team record. First-year Harrisen Egly has picked up five, which is tied for an individual season record. Junior Matt Robinson has three, Ty Wiest has two and Ryan Marks and first-year Brett Gannaway each have one, respectively.
ROAD WARRIORS
Columbia's 16-12 road record is the third best in the nation, according to college baseball writer Eric Sorenson. Dallas Baptist holds a 19-7 mark away from home and Central Michigan boasts an 18-12 record on the road.
HOME SWEET HOME
At home the Lions have also been formidable, posting a 10-2 record. Over the past three season, Columbia is 35-7 at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
PALLER POWER
After missing the bulk of Columbia's spring break trip due to a hand injury, junior tri-captain Robb Paller has hit safely in all 26 games since he returned to action against Army on March 25. He also had a 15-game hit streak from March 25-April 25, the longest for a Lion this season. Against Fordham on April 22, Paller had a career-day, going 4-for-6 with seven RBI, the most in a game since Dario Pizzano had six at Harvard in 2010.
