NEW YORK – Columbia baseball's presence in the minor leagues is up to five players after the recently drafted Gus Craig and Jordan Serena signed their first professional contracts this week with the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, respectively. Serena and Craig will be headed to the Arizona Rookie League where they will be joined by Joey Donino, who was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks in September. The season for the AZL begins this weekend.
The two incumbent Lions in the pros, Dario Pizzano '12CC and David Speer '14CC are also having strong seasons for their respective clubs.
Pizzano is in his second season with the Jackson Generals, the AA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Last week, he was selected to the Southern League All-Star Team. Pizzano is hitting .309 with four homers, 12 doubles and 33 RBI in 57 games and had a 25-game hit-streak earlier this season.

Speer was moved to the Lake County Captains, the long A squad for the Cleveland Indians in the Midwest League. The southpaw has made 20 appearances out of the bullpen with a 2.13 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 40 strikeouts compared to nine walks in 38 innings of work. His record sits at 2-4, despite not giving up an earned run in two of those losses, and has added a save.
