ROCKVILLE, Md. - Harrison Shih grabbed the fourth and final qualifying spot to the U.S. Amateur after a par on the second playoff hole in a qualifier at Lakewood Country Club in Rockville, Maryland.
The soon to be senior was tied at 143 with Ryan Cole of James Madison and Isiah Logue of Liberty after 36 holes at Lakewood. The trio went into a sudden death playoff, which Shih was able to make the most of.
"I had a six-foot putt to make par which was on the same line as I had earlier in the day, so I knew I would have a good chance."
After Shih was able to knock in his putt, both Cole and Logue were unable to match his par, helping the Lion to advance.
"It was a really stressful day because I made triple on the 12th hole after being three-under par on the front nine," Shih said. "I was proud of the way I bounced back after the triple and to finish the last six holes two-under helped me get into the playoff."
The U.S. Amateur will take place on August 17-23 at Olympia Fields Country Club, near Chicago. Shih is the first Lion to qualify for a U.S. Amateur since J. Christian FitzGerald did so last summer.
