Wes Named Ivy League Volleyball Player of the Week

NEW YORK — Columbia senior Cassie Wes has been named Ivy League Volleyball Player of the Week for matches spanning the week of September 26 – October 2. The conference office announced its weekly award winners on Monday.
Wes totaled 55 digs and averaged 6.88 digs per set through Columbia's two victories over Yale and Brown. The reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year posted 29 digs in Friday's five-set victory over the Bulldogs, and followed it up with an impressive 26 digs in only three sets to help Columbia sweep the Bears. The senior libero averaged 8.67 digs per set in the Brown match, upping her season average to 5.56 digs per set, which leads the Ivy League and ranks No. 2 nationally.
Columbia (8-5, 3-0 Ivy) opened the Ivy League season 3-0 for the first time in program history. The Lions have won six consecutive matches overall, marking their longest winning streak since posting a program record nine straight wins in September of 2010.
First-year setter Grace Campbell was recognized on the Ivy League Weekly Honor Roll. Campbell recorded double-doubles against both Yale and Brown, which included a season-high 14 digs in Saturday's victory over the Bears.
Wes's Player-of-the-Week selection marks the third weekly award of the season for the Columbia volleyball program. Sophomore outside hitter Luciana Del Valle was named Ivy League Player of the Week on September 19, and Campbell took home Rookie-of-the-Week honors last Monday.
The Lions put their perfect Ivy League record on the line next weekend when they close out the longest homestand in program history against Princeton and Penn. Columbia will face off in a battle of the league's two undefeated teams on Friday night against Princeton (3-0) at 7 p.m. Penn (2-1) follows on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Lions will have played 12 straight at Levien Gym from September 9 – October 8.
