NEW YORK — Trailing 2-0 into the third, the Columbia volleyball team rallied to force a five-set match. Unfortunately for the Lions, the rally fell short as Brown came away with a 3-2 (27-25, 25-18, 20-25, 21-25, 15-11) win Friday night at Levien Gymnasium.

Columbia carried that momentum into the fourth set, overcoming an early 8-1 deficit to tie the score at 8-8. The Lions moved ahead 14-10 behind a service ace from Gravlee and a Maynulet kill. After Brown pulled within one, Columbia extended its advantage with consecutive kills from Maynulet and a kill from Elise Hiemstra. The Lions held on for a 25-21 win to force a deciding set.
In the fifth, Brown took a 7-3 lead before Columbia rallied to tie the score at 7-7. Evie Naumann recorded a service ace during the three-point run. The teams traded points before Brown scored four straight to take a 14-10 lead. Hiemstra's kill made it 14-11, but the Bears secured the match with the next point, winning 15-11.
Columbia wraps up its five-match homestand on Saturday when the Lions host Yale. Saturday will be Senior Night for the Lions. Columbia will honor its four senior student-athletes playing their final home match in a special pregame ceremony. First serve between the Lions and Bulldogs is scheduled for 5 p.m.
