Runs from both teams dictate match tempo
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Columbia volleyball team put together a series of strong runs against host Brown but couldn't win a set, falling to the Bears in three on Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Columbia (7-9, 1-6 Ivy) managed 26 kills, hitting .146. Alexia Cornea led the Lions with seven kills. Dahlia Roberts added six kills, followed by Elena Maynulet, with five.
Brown (5-10, 3-4 Ivy) hit .409 as a team. The Bears' strong attack was led by Fisayo Afonja's match-high 15 kills on 27 swings for a .481 attack percentage. Sophia Wolfson and Elle Holley each chipped in nine kills.
In the opening set, first-years Roberts and Cornea kept the Lions afloat, rallying seven kills between the pair. But Brown pulled away with a steady, consistent attack. The Bears hit .419 in the opening frame, led by Afonja's six kills; Elle added five.
The second set featured a series of runs from both teams. Brown jumped out to a 5-0 lead early. Coming out of a timeout, the Lions went on a 4-0 run, thanks to an ace from Maynulet and a kill from Cornea. But Brown responded with a 9-3 run to take a 15-7 lead at the media timeout. Out of the timeout, Columbia responded with a 5-1 run. Maynulet tallied a pair of kills. The Bears closed out the set on a 9-3 run, with three kills from Afonja sealing the frame.
Elise Hiemstra checked in to start the third set and made an immediate impact, notching a pair of kills as the Lions jumped to an 8-6 lead. She finished with four in the set. But as in the previous two sets, the Bears took control at the media timeout, this time with a 9-2 run. Danica Nordlicht and Hiemstra each tallied a kill, but it wasn't enough to swing momentum in the Lions' favor, as Brown put the match away with a trio of late kills from Wolfson.
Columbia returns home next Saturday to face Cornell. The first serve between the Lions and the Big Red is scheduled for 5 p.m.
