Elena Maynulet records 14th career double-double in losing effort
NEW YORK — Columbia volleyball battled but couldn't slow the potent Cornell attack, falling in three sets, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20, Saturday evening at Levien Gym.
The Lions (7-10, 1-7 Ivy League) were led by Elena Maynulet, who recorded her sixth double-double of the season and 14th of her career. She finished with 12 kills and 11 digs, plus an ace and a block. Alexia Cornea added 10 kills. As a team, the Lions hit .144, finishing with 33 kills on 104 swings.

In the opening frame, Columbia kept pace early, with Maynulet recording kills that kept the Lions within reach. Cornell gradually built its advantage, using a scoring run to move ahead 11-7 before extending the lead to 16-9. Maynulet and Cornea helped Columbia respond, but Cornell maintained control and closed out the set, 25-18.
The Lions delivered their closest set of the match in the second. The Lions jumped out to an early 5-2 lead following a Madison Hsieh service ace. A 4-0 run by the Big Red cut the Lions' lead to one, 11-10. Maynulet and Danica Nordlicht's block sparked a 4-0 run for the Lions, who went into the media timeout leading 15-10.
The teams continued trading points, with Columbia breaking a 20-20 tie on a Maynulet kill. With Columbia leading 23-22, Cornell took the next three points to take the set 25-23.
In the third and final set, Columbia opened competitively, with the teams tied 3-3 before the Big Red moved ahead 6-4. The Lions rallied back and took an 11-10 lead on a Cornell attack error.
Cornell then used a five-point run to build a 16-11 lead and extend it to 18-11. Columbia continued to battle, with Maynulet and Charlotte Gravlee contributing kills, but Cornell held on to secure the 25-20 set and complete the sweep.
