ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Columbia men's basketball team fell at Navy, 69-54, Friday night. Shawn Anderson led four Midshipmen (5-6) players in double figures with 21 points. The Lions (3-5) dropped their third straight game.
Both teams got off to strong offensive starts, going a combined 8-for-12 to start the game, but Navy held a 10-8 advantage early on. The Midshipmen pulled away, using a full court press to force five straight turnovers to spur an 8-0 run, giving them a 28-16 cushion with 7:40 left in the half.
The Lions came as close as eight after a pair of Nate Hickman free throws at the 3:10 mark and Navy took a 40-30 lead into the break.
In the second half, both offenses stalled and Columbia was unable to put together a sustained run. Mike Smith, who finished with 15 points, drained a 3-pointer from the right wing to trim the margin to 48-41 with 11:05 on the clock, but that was as close as Columbia came.
Navy took its largest lead of the night, 66-48, on a Tom Lacey layup with 2:27 on the clock and never looked back.
Hickman led the Lions with 16 points.
