Noland moves into a tie for 17th place on the all-time scoring list
NEW YORK — Columbia men's basketball fell to Yale in its home finale, 60-54, on Saturday night from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
The Lions (16-11, 5-8) recognized seniors Avery Brown, Kenny Noland, Blair Thompson, and Zine Eddine Bedri in a pregame ceremony. Noland played seven seconds shy of 40 minutes and scored a game-high 20 points. He now has 1,208 for his career, which is tied with Sean Couch '87CC for 17th place on the program's all-time scoring list. Thompson scored seven in his final outing before the home crowd.
Yale (22-5, 10-3) was 22-of-40 from the field and it allowed the Bulldogs to keep pace ahead of the Lions, who went 21-of-58 (36.2 percent) from the floor. The Bulldogs led the entire way. After 10 first-half turnovers by the Lions, they only gave up the ball four more times and forced nine Yale turnovers in the second half.
The Bulldogs opened the night with a 12-0 start, forcing five quick Lions turnovers and hitting their first four shots before the opening media timeout. Noland knocked down a three whilst being fouled and cashed the free throw to close out a four-point play with 12 minutes until the break and make it a 10-point game.
The Lions narrowed the deficit to just three points with 5:39 before halftime after Noland drilled a step back three for his 11th point of the frame. A late scoring drought by the Lions allowed Yale to pull away before heading to halftime up 34-25.
Columbia capitalized on sloppy play by Yale coming out of the half to bring the margin to 36-33. A two-minute scoring drought stopped the Lions in their tracks and the Bulldogs put five more on the scoreboard with 11:19 to go.
With 1:54 to play, Noland picked off a Yale pass and knocked down two free throws to make it a four-point game. Yale went 3:28 down the stretch and into the final minute without scoring a point, but managed to hold on with five made free throws in the final minute.
Columbia closes out the regular season next Friday at Harvard. Tip-off from Lavietes Pavilion is set for 7 p.m.
