Penn Pulls Away Late on Friday to Defeat Men’s Basketball, 76-67

The Lions led with 2:09 to play; Franklin’s first-career double-double not enough
PHILADELPHIA — Columbia men's basketball led for over 33 minutes on Friday night at The Palestra, but fell to Penn, 76-67.
Penn (12-10, 5-4) trailed 65-64 with 2:09 remaining and rattled off a 12-2 run to close out the win. Columbia (14-9, 3-6) turned the ball over three times in the final 1:36 and had a stretch in the second half over an 8:54 span where it missed 12-of-14 shots. There were eight ties in the second half. Penn eventually polished off the game with a 9-0 run over the last 1:03.
Kenny Noland led the Lions with 22 points and went 6-9 from deep. Miles Franklin recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Columbia was plus-five on the glass but shot 3-14 from beyond the arc in the second half. The Quakers had three finish in double-figures, led by Ethan Roberts' 21 points.
After back-to-back triples from Noland to cap an 8-0 run, Columbia led 55-45 with 14:19 to play. It was the Lions' first and only double-digit lead of the night.
The Quakers instantly responded with their own 8-0 spurt to bring the margin within two, just over three minutes later.
Columbia held a four-point lead at the first media timeout of the night thanks to a 2-11 shooting start from Penn. Four different Lions poured in their first four baskets of the game.
Despite nine turnovers over the first 13:11, Columbia led 20-16. The Lions hit eight of their first 15 field goals.
The Lions led for over 18 minutes in the opening half. Columbia's largest lead of the period was seven and Franklin's tip-in off a miss from Leland Coleman at the horn gave the Lions a 37-34 advantage at the break. Columbia shot 56 percent over the first 20 minutes and converted on five-of-eight three-pointers.
Columbia closes out the back-to-back at Princeton on Saturday at 6 p.m.
