The Lions look to bounce back on the road next weekend at Penn and Princeton
NEW YORK — Columbia men's basketball was defeated by a hot-shooting Cornell team, 88-67, Saturday afternoon from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
Kenny Noland led the Lions with 21 points and took sole possession of seventh place for all-time steals in program history after tying Matt Shannon '89CC in his last outing against Princeton. Reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week Connor Igoe added 13 points and was Columbia's other double-figure scorer.
Cornell's Josh Baldwin recorded a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds on 11-of-12 free throw shooting. The Big Red (11-10, 4-4) made 22-of-24 free throws and shot 30-56 (53.6 percent) from the field. Columbia (14-8, 3-5) posted a 46.3 percent mark from the floor and is now 8-3 at home.
Both teams came out stumbling as Columbia picked up four turnovers in four minutes and Cornell shot 2-of-6 to kick off the afternoon. Soon after, Cornell knocked down 8-of-9 field goals while the Lions shot 2-of-10 during that same stretch, giving the Big Red a 24-15 lead with 7:37 to go in the first half.
The Lions made it a four-point game after Hampton Sanders slipped past two defenders and lobbed it up for Ryan Soulis to throw it down with 4:19 until the break. After a 6-0 spurt from the Big Red later in the half over a 25-second span, Cornell carried a 42-32 lead into the locker room.
An 11-0 Cornell run put the Big Red up 53-34 just three minutes into the second half. Miles Franklin impressed as he got back on a fastbreak and met Cornell's Jacob Beccles at the rim to send his dunk flying out of play. The Big Red led by as much as 26 with 9:13 to play.
Columbia is on the road next weekend for a back-to-back at Penn on Friday at 7 p.m. and at Princeton on Saturday at 6 p.m.
