The Lions held a one-point lead with 16 seconds left; Big Green win it at the free throw line with three ticks left
NEW YORK — Columbia men's basketball dropped a heartbreaker, 64-63, to Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
Down one with 34 seconds to go, Connor Igoe stole the ball from Dartmouth's Jackson Munro, then got an offensive board and went to the line, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. At the 16-second mark, Mason Ritter was fouled after a clutch Kenny Noland steal and knocked down both free throws to take a 63-62 lead.
Dartmouth (11-13, 5-6) advanced the ball and took a timeout with 13.1 seconds to go. Columbia fouled on Dartmouth's final shot, allowing them to convert the game-clinching free throws. Blair Thompson pulled up for the potential game-winning three, but it did not fall. Dartmouth was 12-12 from the free throw line in the second half.
Noland led the way for Columbia (15-10, 4-7) with 17 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Thompson scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Igoe posted his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ritter was the fourth Lion in double-figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.
A 6-0 start gave Columbia a lead it would hold onto for most of the first half while it struggled with 13-of-38 field goals over the first 20 minutes. Dartmouth quickly rallied and got within striking distance, trailing 25-23 at the under-four media timeout, but spotty first-half shooting (10-of-30 from the floor) also slowed them down.
Dartmouth took its first lead with 3:43 to go in the half on a triple from Cameron McNamee. The Big Green slipped out of the first half with a 29-28 lead. Thompson and Igoe both led with eight points each in the period.
An 11-0 run put the Big Green up 42-32 with 14:06 to go in the final half. The Lions fired back with a 10-2 spurt to get right back into it in under two minutes. By the under-12 media timeout, Dartmouth only led 48-44.
With 5:13 to go, Noland hit a three-pointer to make it a one-point game. Columbia hung on to that margin for the next four minutes as the shots were not falling. Dartmouth failed to hit a field goal over the final 4:17. Noland had 15 second-half points. The Lions dominated the Big Green on the glass, 45-34.
Columbia stays home next weekend for a back-to-back against Brown on Friday at 7 p.m. and Yale on Saturday at 6 p.m.
