MALIBU, Calif. – The Columbia baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Pepperdine Saturday. The Lions (2-4) fell 15-6 in game one and 12-2 in the nightcap. Columbia and the Waves (6-8) continue their four game series Sunday, March 12 at 4 p.m. ET.
GAME ONE RECAP
Pepperdine led 9-0 after four innings, chasing starting pitcher George Thanopoulos after 3.1 innings, but the Lions did not go away quietly and scored four runs in the eighth inning to get back into the game. However, the Waves answered with five in the bottom half of the frame to put the contest away.
Pepperdine posted all three of its runs in the second inning with two outs, capitalizing on a single, walk and two hit batters to bring in the first score of the day. Matthew Kanfer tacked on a pair of runs with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
Kanfer started a six-run fourth with a groundout with a runner on third to bring in another run. Brad Anderson singled through the right side for an RBI and Ben Rodriguez delivered the big blow, a grand slam homer.
Columbia, who was held to just one hit through the first six innings, got on the board in the seventh on a two-run blast from Shane Adams, the first of his career to cut the deficit to seven, but the Waves had an answer in the bottom of the stanza, and extended the advantage to 10-2 after an error led to an unearned run.
In the top of the eighth, the Lions loaded the bases for John Kinne, who worked a walk to drive in Mark Patrick Flynn with one out. A wild pitch helped Joe Engel touch home and put runners on second and third. Robb Paller followed with an RBI groundout and Nick Maguire posted a single to trim the margin to 10-6. Adams was issued a base on balls to load the bases again, but a foul out ended the threat, and Pepperdine erased all of Columbia's offensive work with a five-spot in the bottom of the inning.
Thanopoulos fell to 0-2 with the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits.
