SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Columbia baseball team lost its fifth-straight game, a 21-5 decision, at San Diego. The Lions (2-7) and Toreros (10-8) wrap up their series on Wednesday, March 16, at 9 p.m. ET.
Kyle Bartelman led the offensive attack with a 3-for-4 outing from the plate. He posted a double, a homer, two RBI and three runs scored.
The Toreros used a three-run shot by Ryan Kirby to open the scoring in the bottom of the first. San Diego followed with four consecutive two-out hits to drive in three more runs and extend the margin to 6-0.
Columbia answered in the top of the second, using a double from Kyle Bartelman and a single from Chandler Bengtson to get on the board. Ben Porter posted a base hit and Will Savage drew a walk to load the bases, but San Diego's CJ Burdick got out of the jam by inducing a pop up to limit the damage.
In the bottom of the frame, RBI singles from R Kirby and an error led to pair of scores to make it 8-1.
The Lions answered in the top of the third to pull within five. Lan Robinette notched a one-out single followed by the two-run homer from Bartelman.
However, the Toreros went on to add five in the third and six in the fifth to dash any hopes for a comeback.
Columbia tried to rally again in the seventh, loading the bases on a Bartelman walk and knocks from Matt Karo and Bengtson. Mark Patrick Flynn drove in a run with a single and Michael Kuzbel was issued a walk to plate Karo.
San Diego wrapped up the scoring with two runs in the eighth.
Bryce Barr (0-1) started on the mound and took the decision.
