SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Columbia baseball team continued to pile up the hits, but fell at San Diego, 6-3, Wednesday. The Lions (2-8) notched 13 hits, but left 13 runners on base in the defeat.
Robb Paller was 3-for-5 with three doubles and an RBI. Kyle Bartelman and Ben Porter also picked up three hits for Columbia.
The Lions struck first in their first turn at-bats. Will Savage led things off with a single, stole second and came around to score on a Robb Paller double to the gap in right-center. However, the Columbia lead was short-lived.
The Toreros (11-8) put runners on second and third with one out after a single, stolen base and an error. Ryan Kirby evened the score at 1-1 with a sac fly and Hunter Mercado-Hood followed with an RBI single to plate the go-ahead run.
Paller's second double of the day in the third set up Logan Boyher, who came through with a base-hit to tie things up, 2-2.
In the bottom of the fifth San Diego regained the lead, scoring three runs all with two outs. Bryson Brigman singled and Riley Adams was beaned before an error allowed a run to score and make it, 3-2. Mercado-Hood delivered another crushing blow, a two-run double to extend the margin to three.
The Toreros tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on a Jared Smith double that brought in Daniel Gardner all the way from first base.
Columbia rallied to cut the margin to 6-3 in the top of the seventh. Paller pulled a double down the rightfield line and Kyle Bartelman's base knock put runners on the corners for Boyher, who reached via error to bring in Paller.
The Lions put runners on in both the eighth and ninth innings, but could not come any closer.
Zack Bahm (0-1) lasted 6.0 innings, giving up just two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
The Lions will wrap up their spring break trip with a four-game series at Long Beach State. First pitch of the opener is slated for 9 p.m. ET.
