NEW YORK – The Columbia baseball team used a seventh inning homer from Logan Boyher and a strong relief outing from Harrisen Egly to outlast Connecticut, 4-3, in the Lions' home opener Friday. The Lions (5-11) have now won three-straight.
Boyher launched his second long-ball of the season just inside the foul pole in leftfield to give Columbia the lead for good.
However, the Huskies (9-11) threatened with two outs in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Troy Stefanski was grazed on the sleeve and UConn's leadoff man Jack Sundberg singled to center to put runners on the corners, but Egly got the next batter to fly out to center to get out of the jam.
In the top of the ninth with the go-ahead run at the plate and two outs, second baseman Will Savage fully extended to make a tough grab to end the ballgame.
Egly improved to 2-1, tossing 2.2 innings with three strikeouts out of the bullpen. Adam Cline threw the first 6.1, allowing three runs on seven hits to go with five strikeouts.
Nick Maguire gave the Lions an early 2-0 advantage with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. In the second, Boyher and Chandler Bengtson posted back-to-back doubles to tack on an insurance run before the Huskies got on the board.
UConn notched a single and double to put runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the third inning. A groundout and sac fly cut the deficit to 3-2. The Huskies eventually tied the game in the top of the seventh on a solo shot from Sundberg.
Savage pushed his on-base streak to 18 consecutive games and went 2-for-4. Robb Paller notched a first-inning hit to extend his hitting streak to 13 contests.
The Lions and Huskies will finish their series in Storrs, Connecticut, for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 26. First pitch of game one is slated for 12 p.m.
