NEW YORK - The Columbia baseball team came back from five runs down early and held off a strong offensive Manhattan squad, 14-12, in the Lions' final scheduled non-conference game.
Junior Shane Adams hit a grand-slam homer in the fifth inning to put Columbia (14-23) in front for good.
The Jaspers (13-25) scored five runs in the third inning, but the Lions answered with four in the bottom of the frame to get back into the ballgame.
Mat Karo and Ben Porter got ahead in each of their counts and notched base-hits to start things off. Robb Paller came to the plate with the bases loaded after a Will Savage walk and delivered a single to center to get Columbia on the board. Randell Kanemaru continued the station-to-station game with a knock to centerfield to make it 5-2. A John Kinne sac fly drove in Savage and Kyle Bartelman ripped a single past a diving Manhattan second baseman to cut the Lions' deficit to one.
The Jaspers tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth before the floodgates opened in the bottom of the fifth.
Columbia loaded the bases with no outs once again to set up a sacrifice fly from Joe Engel. Mark Patrick Flynn delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to pull the Lions within 7-6. Logan Boyher worked a walk to set the table for Adams, who came off the bench and took a 2-1 pitch over the wall in leftfield to give Columbia its first lead of the day, 10-7.
In the top of the sixth, Manhattan's Jose Carrera drove in a run with a double, stole third and scored after an errant throw to trim the margin to one. However, Nick Maguire pulled a single to rightfield to plate Kanemaru to restore a two-run cushion.
Chandler Bengston emerged from the dugout in the bottom of the seventh and crushed an opposite field bomb over the scoreboard in left-center. Adams picked up his second hit of the contest and later scored on a wild pitch to extend the margin to 13-9. Kanemaru capped the scoring for Columbia with a sacrifice fly.
Manhattan put up a three-spot in the top of the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Zack Bahm retired the next three batters in order for his first save of the season.
