NEW YORK - The Columbia track & field teams put up multiple season bests when competing at both the Virginia Challenge and the Larry Ellis Invitational this weekend.
Both meets took place on Friday and Saturday, with the full fleet of the Columbia teams taking part in the pair of meets.
At the Virginia Challenge, Sarah Hardie put forth the women's top finish, clocking a 2:07.83 in the 800m run for seventh place. Brittney Wade was close behind in 11th at 2:08.67, as both runners clocked season bests in the event.
Another top time came from Natalie Tanner in the 5K run, when the junior went 16:31.76 for eighth place in a career best outing. Libby Kokes also put up a top personal time, taking 12th in the 1500m run at 4:22.24.
A pair of first-year's had strong outings for the men's team in the 800m run, when Alek Sauer and Sam Ritz took off. The classmates both had a career best times, when Sauer crossed the line in 1:49.15 for 10th, and Ritz went 1:50.43 in his first outdoor meet.
Robert Napolitano also put up a top outdoor time at Virginia, going 3:45.33 in the 1500m run for 18th.
At the Larry Ellis Invitational, several athletes on both sides found themselves in the top eight.
Akua Obeng-Akrofi recorded the third best time in school history in the 400m dash, clocking a 54.36 for third. Not far behind was Jaycee Parker, finishing in sixth place at 55.13.
Also taking third was Anna Williams in the triple jump, leaping out to a career best effort in 12.75m, while the 100m hurdles were highlighted by Iris Chijioke, who claimed sixth in 14.23.
The men got a runner-up finish from Brian Zabilski in the 5K, when the first-year went 14:14.69, just ahead of Marc Violone in fourth at 14:18.49. Other highlights included Tommy Rooney taking eighth in the 3K Steeplechase, matching the outcome of Corey Hammond in the 400m hurdles at 53.20.
