NEW YORK – The Columbia baseball team bounced back with a pair of victories over Brown Sunday afternoon. The Lions improved to 7-15 overall and 2-2 in Ivy League play. Columbia is back in action this Wednesday, April 6 against St. John's. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
The Lions manufactured three runs through the first two innings. A bases loaded walk opened the scoring before a wild bottom of the second led to a series of unusual plays.
Kyle Bartelman led off with a walk and moved to second after a sacrifice. Joe Engel dropped down another bunt, would have beaten throw, but starting pitcher Austin French overran the ball, allowing Bartelman to score from second.
Will Savage squared for another bunt try and forced a rushed throw by the third baseman to put runners on second and third. Logan Boyher extended the advantage to 3-0 with an RBI groundout.
In the third, Randell Kanemaru singled and appeared to be picked off, but a wild throw by the Bears' first baseman put him on third with no outs. French induced a ground out and fanned the next batter for the second out, but Bartelman singled up the middle to tack on another score.
Savage made the play of the day in the fourth, working a one-out walk and stealing second base. A ground-ball out pushed him to third and with French, a left-hander, working out of the windup, the junior darted down the base line and scored after the pitch went by the Brown catcher.
Columbia tacked on two more in the fifth on a wild pitch to score Bartelman and a Lane Robinette RBI double. The Bears broke up starting pitcher Kevin Roy's shutout bid in the six with two runs and added another in the seventh, but the deficit was too large to overcome.
Roy evened his record at 2-2, tossing six innings of two-hit ball. He allowed two runs and struck out five. Kanemaru, Savage and Bartelman all had two hits.

Brown struck in the second inning of game two, using a two-run double from Willy Hozma to take its first lead of the afternoon. Bartelman cut the deficit in half with a solo blast in the bottom of the frame and the Lions took the lead for good in the third.
Paller reached on an infield single followed by a Maguire walk. A balk pushed both runners into scoring postion and Kanemaru chopped a ball back to the mound that starting pitcher JJ Sliepka could not knock down to even things up. Bartelman delivered a triple down the rightfield line to drive in the go-ahead runs. A Shane Adams groundout extended the advantage to 5-2.
A bases loaded walk in the fourth gave Bartelman is fourth RBI of the game. John Kinne tacked on a sac fly. An error prolonged the bottom of the fifth, leading to two more tallies to extend the margin to seven. Chandler Bengtson capped the scoring with an RBI single.
