CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Columbia baseball team outlasted Harvard, 4-3, in 11 innings to preserve a split against the Crimson. The Lions (9-16, 3-3) dropped the opener, 11-1.
Harvard kicked things off with a single and a double to put runners on third with no outs before starting pitcher Adam Cline buckled down. The senior induced two ground-ball outs, the second scored the opening run, but then forced a fly out to get out of the jam.
In the bottom of the third, a leadoff double by Ben Skinner set up an RBI single from Mitch Klug. A double play pushed Klug to third and Patrick McColl poked a single to left to extend the margin to 3-0.
Columbia responded in the top of the fourth, using back-to-back doubles from Robb Paller and Randell Kanemaru to cut the deficit to two. Kanemaru moved to third on a deep fly out to center, but John Kinne was robbed of a base-hit after a diving grab by Harvard shortstop Drew Reid.
The Crimson broke things open in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases after two hit batsmen and an infield single. A groundout drove in John MacLean and after an intentional walk, McColl punched a single to right to bring in a pair. Matt Rothenberg followed with a knock to extend the advantage to 7-1.
Bryan delivered a bases clearing double to bring in three runs in the bottom of the fifth. A check-swing single by Rothenberg gave Harvard a 10-run lead.
Nick Maguire belted a solo homer in the sixth and Paller picked up an RBI double in the seventh.

Down 2-1 after four innings of play, the Lions threatened in each inning but stranded at least two baserunners in each frame until the top of the ninth.
Paller drew a walk to start things off and moved to second on a Kanemaru knock. Kyle Bartelman laid down a sacrifice bunt that left-handed pitcher Sean O'Neill fielded. O'Neill looked to third for the force play, but opted to spin towards first and rushed a throw that pulled the first baseman off the bag. With the bases full, Maguire pulled a single through the right side to score two and give Columbia a 3-2 lead. The Lions had a chance to add to the margin, but O'Neill retired the next three batters in order.
Harrisen Egly came on and walked the first batter he faced, but struck out the next two hitters to put the Lions one out away from a regulation victory. However, Ben Skinner took a 2-1 pitch down the rightfield line for a triple to bring in MacLean.
The score remained knotted until the 11th when Maguire reached on a double. With one away, Shane Adams came up with a single up the middle and Maguire slid under the relay throw from center to give Columbia the lead for good.
Egly (3-1), working his third inning of relief, sent the Crimson down in order to preserve the win. Egly punched out a career-high six batters.
The Lions broke through in the top of the first. Will Savage registered a leadoff double and a Boyher single put runners on the corners. Paller hit a ball to the right of the mound and Savage aggressively took off from home and forced a wild throw to the plate to make it 1-0 in favor of Columbia.
A sac fly knotted the score in the bottom of the third and Harvard's John Fallon went deep in the bottom of the fourth to give the Crimson a 2-1 edge.
Columbia's pitchers combined to allow just four hits and struck out 12.
The Lions are back in action Sunday, April 10 for an Ivy League Championship Series rematch against Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
