
Four Goals In the First Half Lifts Columbia Over Wagner

Staten Island, N.Y. – The Columbia women's soccer team capped the weekend with its second-consecutive shutout victory on Sunday, Sept. 25th with an impressive 4-0 win at Wagner. Behind a season-high four goals in the opening period, the Lions dominated the match to improve to 4-4-2.
Columbia jumped out to its best start this season with a sensational offensive display in the first half. In a two-minute span, the Lions found the back of the net twice for a 2-0 lead in the 18th minute. Rookie defender Amalya Johnson played a beautiful ball into the box to Natalie Neshat after controlling a scramble from the intial corner kick. Neshat quickly fired in the Lions first score on a header in the 16th minute. The goal marked Johnson's first career assist and is Neshat's third score of the year and the second this weekend.
Emma Anderson kept things going for the Lions offensive with back-to-back scores in the period, including a goal from a strong shot from 25-yards away in the 18th minute, with the assist from Neshat, and a successful finish on a penalty kick opportunity in the 20th minute. Anderson now leads the Lions in scoring this season with a total of four goals.
Closing the dominant half was senior co-captain Maddie Linde who chipped in a goal from the bottom right after fielding the assist by rookie Maddie Temares. Temares first assist of the year gives Linde her third goal on the season and the Lions a 4-0 lead at the break.
The defensive for Columbia in the remained stout throughout the match with four Lions seeing time in goal. Allison Spencer and Sophie Whitehouse split time in the first half to blank the Seahawks, while Marie Matthews and Nicole Cerulli secured the shutout in the second half in their first time in action this season.
Up next, the Lions will jump back into Ivy League play on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 3:30 p.m. as they trek to Providence, Rhode Island to take on Brown.
