Hall Of Fame Series: 2006 Columbia Women's Soccer Team

GoColumbiaLions.com is taking a look at the teams, student-athletes, coaches and staff members set to be inducted in the Columbia University Athletics Hall of Fame this October. Our next installment features the 2006 women's soccer team.

2006 Women's Soccer Team

In 2006, Columbia enjoyed one of its greatest season, going 10-5-3 and 6-0-1 in Ivy League play to capture its first conference title. Led by senior standout Shannon Munoz and first-year Sophie Reiser the Lions featured a potent offense to back the stellar play of goalie Allison Vespa.

Munoz emerged as one of the dominant figures during this historic journey, becoming Columbia's first Ivy League Player of the Year in 2006. After missing nearly all of 2005 with an injury, Munoz came back strong in 2006, leading the team in scoring with eight goals and five assists, including a total of five goals and three assists in seven Ivy League matches.

Three other Lions earned a spot on the All-Ivy League first team: senior defender Emma Judkins, senior midfielder Bailey Schroeder and junior goalkeeper Allison Vespa. Senior co-captain Meghan Hurlbut, senior defender Cassie Hamar and junior defender Cathleen Cimino each earned honorable mention honors.

In the Ivy League title match against Harvard, Aubrey Medal knocked home the game-winner off a corner taken by Munoz in the 80th minute. After the ball was knocked around in the box, Medal slotted it home, setting off pandemonium on the Lion sidelines.

The Lions went on to make their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament, following an 6-0-1 undefeated Ivy League season, taking on UConn in the first round. Although the Lions tournament hopes concluded against the Huskies, the 2006 accolades continued.

After leading Columbia to its first Ivy League title, head coach Kevin McCarthy was named the Northeast Region Coach of the Year by his peers in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Columbia ended the regular season ranked fifth in the Northeast by the NSCAA and SoccerBuzz and received top 25 votes in a national poll of head coaches conducted by Soccer Times.

Assistant women's soccer coach Werner T. Dasbach was named the 2006 East Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), joining McCarthy as a regional award winner chosen by their peers in the NSCAA.

When the NSCAA announced its all-region teams, Munozand Emma Judkins joined their coaches by picking up first team and third team accolades, respectively.
