Columbia's 2025 season ends on Thursday despite a strong defensive effort
PRINCETON, N.J. – Columbia women's soccer's remarkable 2025 campaign came to an end Thursday afternoon in the Ivy League Semifinals, as the Lions fell 1-0 to Dartmouth at Roberts Stadium in New Jersey.
Despite a strong second-half push and an 8-4 advantage in shots after the break, Columbia couldn't find an equalizer to extend its postseason stay.
The Lions' best chance of the day came in the 20th minute, when senior captain Maia Tabion curled a shot from outside the box that deflected off the right post and stayed out.
The Big Green jumped ahead in the 25th minute when Stephanie Lathrop capitalized on a loose ball at the edge of the box and slipped one past Samantha Mahoney, which would stand as the difference. The Lions regrouped quickly, applying pressure for the remainder of the contest and generating several late chances, but a compact Dartmouth back line held firm.
Evelyn Javers led Columbia with three shots, including one on target, while Dema Elder added a look on goal. Defensively, captain Justina Bitzer anchored a steady back four that limited Dartmouth to just three shots on goal all afternoon.
The defeat closes a successful season that saw Columbia (6-7-3, 4-2-1 Ivy) reach the Ivy League Tournament for the third consecutive season, remain unbeaten for the entire month of September, finish third in the regular-season standings, and record signature victories over St. John's, Brown, Yale, and Harvard.
