ITHACA, N.Y. — The Columbia women's basketball team opened the Ivy League season with a hard-fought loss to Cornell, 77-70, Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena.
After trailing the entire second half, Columbia (10-4, 0-1 Ivy) used a 9-0 fourth-quarter run to take a 66-65 lead. Sophomore Emily Surloff started the run with back-to-back 3-balls to cut the Big Red margin to two. Junior Camille Zimmerman followed on the next possession with three points the old-fashioned way, giving the Lions the lead with 6:06 to play.
Cornell (10-4, 1-0 Ivy) answered with the next six points, holding the Lions off the scoreboard for nearly four minutes. Zimmerman ended the drought by connecting on consecutive possessions, which cut Cornell's lead down to one, 71-70, entering the final minute of play.
Unfortunately, the Lions missed their final five shots as Cornell escaped with the win.
Zimmerman scored a game-high 24 points and collected 10 rebounds for her Ivy League-leading eighth double-double. Surloff, who started for the first time this season, scored 12 points of 4-of-8 from 3-point land. Sophomore Paulina Koerner added 11 points and senior Tori Oliver matched Zimmerman in rebounds with 10.
Nia Marshall scored 18 points to head a group of five Cornell players in double figures. She was joined by Nicholle Aston (16), Janee Dennis (13), Kerri Moran (12) and Megan LeDuc (10). Aston led the Big Red with 11 rebounds.
Cornell shot 6-of-10 from 3-point range and got to the foul line twice as many times as Columbia. The Lions, who entered the game ranked No. 3 in the country in rebound margin (+14.4) only outrebounded the Big Red by two.
The Lions will look to avenge the loss next Saturday, when they welcome Cornell to Levien Gymnasium. Tip is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. The men's basketball team follows against the Big Red at 7 p.m.
