NEW YORK — The Columbia women's basketball team shot a season-high 53 percent from 3-point range and outrebounded Dartmouth by 17 to earn a 69-48 victory Saturday night in Ivy League play at Levien Gymnasium.
Columbia (13-10, 3-7 Ivy) hit 8 of 15 from downtown, including all three of its first-quarter attempts. The Lions shot 69 percent in the opening period to race ahead by 11 and never trailed from there.
“I want us to throw the first punch and not settle,” said head coach Megan Griffith '07CC. “Today was all about total focus and business. That might just have to be our thing. I like to have a laid back environment sometimes, but if that's what we need then that's what we need.”
Dartmouth (6-17, 1-9 Ivy) tied things up once in the second quarter, but the Lions scored the final six points of the half and outscored the Big Green 37-22 through the final 20 minutes. A 16-0 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters iced away the victory.
Eleven Lions found the scoring column, led by Camille Zimmerman's game-high 20. The junior shot 9 of 20 from the field and also led all players with 10 rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Senior Tori Oliver scored 11 points to go with seven rebounds. The duo led Columbia to a 48-31 advantage on the glass.
Several other Lions played a big part in the victory, including junior Alexa Giuliano, who scored a season-high eight points off the bench. She hit a triple as part of Columbia's first-quarter run and put the Lions up by the eventual final with a deep ball in the waning seconds.
Columbia rejected a season-high six shots and dished out 19 assists – one off its season-high 20. Meanwhile, Dartmouth struggled moving the ball against Columbia, only earning four assists on 19 made baskets. Fanni Szabo and Isalys Quinones each scored a team-high 12 points for the Big Green.
Columbia outshot Dartmouth 45.9 percent to 32.2 percent. The Big Green were limited to 4 of 19 (21.1 pct.) from 3-point range and also shot just 50 percent from the foul line.
The win earned the Lions a season sweep over Dartmouth. Columbia won a thrilling, 91-88, quadruple-overtime game three weeks ago in Hanover, tying for the longest game in Ivy League women's basketball history.
Oliver, Zimmerman and junior Paige Tippet all scored through Columbia's first three possessions. Dartmouth took its only lead of the night at 7-6, which lasted 25 seconds before Zimmerman struck from 3-point range. Giuliano scored the next five Columbia points, sparking the 8-0 run that grew the lead to double figures. Columbia's advantage reached as many as 11 in the first period, 22-11, before two free throws by Quinones brought it back to single digits heading to the second.
Columbia cooled off and scored just once through the first six minutes of the second quarter. A 7-0 Dartmouth run brought the margin to two points and an Emily Slagle layup tied the score at 26 with 3:02 before the break. The Lions regained their composure and scored the final six points of the period, including a layup by Sampleton at the buzzer, to go up 32-26.
Dartmouth hung around through the third period and made it a four-point game, 45-41, on a Quinones 3-pointer at the 2:41 mark. However, that would be the Big Green's final points for the next 7 minutes and 37 seconds. Columbia scored 16 unanswered in the meantime, including 3-balls by Tippet and sophomore Abby Lee. Oliver's bucket with 5:44 remaining ended the 16-0 run with the Lions in front by 20.
Columbia makes its final road trip of the regular season next weekend, traveling to Princeton and Penn. The Tigers begin the weekend Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by the Quakers on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
