PRINCETON, N.J. — Camille Zimmerman broke the Columbia women's basketball program's single-season Div. I scoring record, but it came in defeat, 78-54, at Princeton Friday night in Ivy League action at Jadwin Gymnasium.
Zimmerman came into the game eight points away from Columbia Hall of Famer Judie Lomax's record 521 points from the 2009-10 season. The junior didn't waste any time, connecting on four of her first five shot attempts and breaking the record with her 522nd point at the 1:35 mark of the opening quarter.
Zimmerman finished with a game-high 27 points to mark her ninth straight outing of 20 or more. She also posted a game-high eight rebounds, helping Columbia (13-11, 3-8 Ivy) outduel Princeton (14-9, 8-2 Ivy) on the glass, 39-32.
Even after falling behind 17-5, the Lions hung with Princeton through the entire first half. Zimmerman and senior Devon Roeper combined for the final six points of the first quarter and senior Tori Oliver kept the run going with the first basket of the second quarter, completing an 8-0 run with Columbia down just four.
Oliver scored six of her 11 points in the second period and passed program legend Kathy Gilbert (1987-91) for third on Columbia's career scoring list. The senior from Manassas, Virginia, has 1,311 career points.
Zimmerman, who shot 7 of 11 in the first half, brought the Lions all the way back with a 3-point play to level the score at 26. She finished the first half with 15.
Princeton ended the half with nine of the last 11 points. Gabrielle Rush hit from beyond the arc and Kenya Holland answered Zimmerman's 3-point play with one of her own to put the Tigers back on top, 35-28, at the half.
Columbia shot 46 percent through the first 20 minutes and outrebounded Princeton, 18-12. However, Princeton was able to score 12 points off 10 Columbia turnovers.
The second half belonged to Princeton, outscoring the Lions 43-26 and holding them to 4 for 21 (19 pct.) from the field. Columbia fought back to make it an 11-point game with 9:26 to go, but the Tigers responded with 15 unanswered to put the game out of reach.
The Lions head to Philadelphia to take on the Ivy League's top team, Penn (16-7, 9-1 Ivy) Saturday night. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Palestra.
