NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – A pair of goals from Arthur Bosua and a shutout by the defense helped the Columbia men's soccer team top Central Connecticut State, 2-0 Friday evening.
With the victory, the Lions stay unbeaten in 2017 at 4-0-2, while the Blue Devils drop to 3-4-1. Columbia also improves to 3-0-0 all-time against CCSU.
The first score from the senior came in the 22nd minute, thanks to an assist by Danny Laranetto. Just over 13 minutes later, Beto Carillo served up an assist to Bosua, who put it away for his second of the game.
The Blue Devils were able to put up eight shots in the first half with six of those coming on goal, but Dylan Castanheira was able to lock down all six attempts. That trend continued in the second half, when the junior saved another shot on goal to finish with seven for the game during his third shutout of the year and 12th of his career.
Aside from Castanheira, the Columbia defense held strong, as CCSU totaled eight corner kicks, but were unable to net a goal from those changes.
The multi-goal game for Bosua was his first since he recorded a hat trick with an assist in a 4-0 win over Cornell last year. Carillo becomes the second rookie this season to score a point, as Blake Willis also recorded an assist against UMass.
Francisco Agrest led the shooting attempts with four including a pair on goal, while Bosua finished with three shots and John Denis, Dylan Mott, and Lucho Gazcon had two each.
Columbia opens up Ivy League play next weekend with a 1 p.m. match against Brown at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer stadium.
