Akanksha Bhan advances to third round with two victories, all three Lions doubles teams win two matches apiece.
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Columbia women's tennis team wrapped up weekend competition at the ITA Northeast Regional Championship presented by Oracle at Yale University's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on Sunday.
Columbia first-year Akanksha Bhan fared the best of any Columbia doubles team or singles player as she won two matches to advance to the fourth round of the Singles Main Draw before falling 7-5, 6-2 to No. 1 seed Jessica Livianu of St. John's.
Friday's matches and day one couldn't have gone any better for Columbia as the Lions fared better than any team in the field. The Lions swept their three doubles matches and sophomore Christie Wan and first-year Yekaterina Alferova both captured singles matches.
On Saturday, all three doubles teams advanced to the third round with victories. In singles, Bhan, sophomore Jennifer Kerr and Wan all won singles matches to advance.
Sunday saw all three doubles teams drop matches, along with three singles players.
A total of nine Columbia women's tennis players—Kerr, Bhan, Wan, Alferova and first-year Melissa Sakar in singles and Wan/senior Andrea Kevakian, Bhan/sophomore Paulina Ferrari and Kerr/senior Sarah Hu in doubles. The event runs from October 11-16. The tournament website is located at this link.
Columbia concludes its fall season at the Brown Invitational, Nov. 2-4 in Providence, R.I.
