Steve Ongley Joins Coaching Staff

Ongley spent four years as an assistant at Colby College and most recently was the video coordinator at Boston University.
NEW YORK – Steve Ongley will join the Columbia men's basketball staff as an assistant coach for the 2018-19 season, head coach Jim Engles announced this afternoon. Ongley spent four years as an assistant coach at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and most recently was the video coordinator at Boston University.
"We're really happy to welcome Steve to our staff," Engles said. "He's used to recruiting the type of high-academic student-athletes we are trying get here at Columbia from his time at Colby. Steve brings a lot of energy and passion for the game and I think he'll do a great job with the guys currently on the team as well."
In a short stint with the Terriers, Ongley filmed practices and organized scouting videos for the staff and was the social media coordinator and marketing liaison.
While with Colby, he was the program's recruiting coordinator and responsible for scheduling. Ongley worked with the team's forwards and centers and served as the defensive coordinator.
Ongley played college basketball at Colby-Sawyer College, where he helped the Chargers earn a Commonwealth Coast Conference title during the 2002-03 academic year. He was on the Athletic Academic Honor Roll during his time at Colby-Sawyer from 2002 to 2004.
Ongley was a head coach of various age groups in the Connecticut Gold AAU program from 2007 to 2012. The AAU program is run by current Cheshire Academy head coach Kevin Kehoe.
Before his appointment at Colby, Ongley worked as assistant varsity basketball coach at Daniel Hand High School and was head coach of the JV and freshman teams at different times from 2007 to 2014. Ongley was the New Haven County Boys Sub-Varsity Coach of the Year for Sportsmanship in 2014. During his time coaching at Daniel Hand, Ongley worked at Yale University in Academic Computing Services and also was a member of the Daniel Hand Special Education Department.
Ongley has been the co-director of the Madison Hoop Dreams Summer Camp. He ran everyday operations of the camp, managed 30 counselors, and 90 to 100 campers each week.
