Lily Keane '13BC wins women's championship doubles, lightweight and women's fours finish strong
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Columbia's rowing programs and alumni enjoyed successful performances at the 54th annual Head of the Charles Regatta over the weekend on the Charles River.
The Lions took sixth out of 18 boats in the women's championship four, completing the course with a time of 20:20.670. The crew of juniors Sabina Maurer, Maryse Suppiger, Liza Ray, Astrid Walker-Stewart and first-year coxswain Tteja Senthilnathan got off to a blazing start, leading the pack as they passed the Riverside Boat Club, less than a second ahead of Stanford. The Lions were still pushing hard in fourth at the second checkpoint, just past the Weld Boathouse and headed under the Anderson Bridge. They fell to seventh at the Cambridge Boat Club checkpoint but put together a strong finish to eclipse Brown by two seconds and Cornell by seven seconds.
The lightweights featured a group of novices in Richard Taylor, Michael Ritter, Tim Cervera, Jack Hartman and coxswain Simon Osak. The crew was strong in their first collegiate event, taking eighth in the 16-boat men's lightweight four. They held their position for the majority of the race, crossing Riverside in seventh, Weld in ninth and Cambridge in ninth before besting a crew from Delaware down the stretch to finish eighth.
Forty-seven Columbia and Barnard alumni also participated in the event. Among the many highlights was Lily Keane '13BC, who won the women's championship doubles alongside Maureen McAuliffe with a time of 18:23.975. The duo crossed the Cambridge Boat Club in second place, 13 seconds behind leaders Jenifer Forbes and Elizabeth Sonshine, before putting together an incredible run at the end to win the event by 1.3 seconds. It marked the second straight year Keane has taken gold in the women's championship doubles.
Saiya Remmler '85CC also medaled in the women's 50-and-over grand master singles, finishing third out of 43 entries with a time of 22:33.163.
