Lions to send four crews to season-opening regatta
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's rowing team begins the 2019 season on Saturday, sending four boats to compete at the Doc Hosea Invitational. The regatta will be held on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey.
"This part of the year will be more about the team discovering its identity and finding it together, which can sometimes be a difficult process," second-year head coach Emerson Curry said. "But I'm really pleased with how the group has come together over the past few months. I think they're having a lot of fun and getting a lot faster."
The all-day event beings with prelims Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Columbia's varsity eight will race in heat two, scheduled for 8:12, against Dartmouth, Minnesota, Navy, URI and Temple. The second varsity eight prelim will go off at 8:36, followed by the varsity four at 9:00 and the second varsity four at 9:24.
After a short break, the petite and grand final events begin at 11 a.m. and run through 12:36 p.m. The grand finals will feature the top two teams in each heat plus the next two teams with the fastest overall times.
Columbia's varsity eight features senior coxswain Christy Abraham, junior Sabina Maurer, junior Liza Ray, senior Maya Hartleben, sophomore Honor Clements, junior Anna Beshlian, first-year India Colegrave and junior Astrid Walker-Stewart. Only three of those Lions competed in the varsity eight at last year's Ivy League Championship.
"Last year we had nine seniors who were all invested and had a lot of leadership," Curry added. "This year we have a much smaller senior class but they've done a really exceptional job. Our juniors are particularly motivated, our sophomores are very talented and starting to come together and our freshmen are a big group that also has a lot of talent. There is a lot of absorbing and learning that goes on your freshman year. That group might not see what they are capable of until they get a few races under their belt."
